simpson's attorney says she was acting in self-defense. in just a few hours, students plan to learn which d.c. public schools they plan to shut down. a source tells news 4 as many as 19 schools could be on the list. they're being targeted because of low enrollment and poor performance. this is the first major round of school closures since 2008, when then chancellor michelle rhee closed 12 schools. d.c. chief kenneth ellerbe says they don't have enough staffing. so he's changing the rules to put more paramedics on the street during the busiest hours. not everyone is convinced it will work. >> monday through thursday may look good on paper, but a friday and saturday night in the

slick road conditions because rain combined with leaves makes the local roads very slick. 395, still a wet commute. but 95 and 395, not seeing any accidents and no overnight construction. your travel lanes are open. i-270 at father hurley, very slick roadways. but as you make your way north and southbound, no issues to report. clear as you connect to the beltway. 4:33 now. news 4's angie goff is live at the desk with the growing petraeus scandal. >> yes, this investigation keeps getting bigger. the top u.s. commander in afghanistan is now under investigation in connection to the scandal that led to cia director david petraeus' resignation. general john allen is being investigated by the fbi for alleged inappropriate communication with the woman at the center of the petraeus scandal. investigators uncovered 20,000 to 30,000 pages of communication, mostly e-mails between allen and jill kelley.

kelley is the longtime friend of the petraeus family who complained about being harassed by the woman petraeus had an affair with. a senior administration official denies allen committed any wrongdoing and expects to return to duty as commander in afghanistan as the investigation continues. this morning general allen is in washington, d.c., preparing for his senate confirmation hearing. aides close to allen say he didn't find out about all this in the investigation until tonight and the general will still appear his meetings scheduled on the hill today. and on the same topic this morning, the fbi will not say what it found at the home of the woman in the center of the david petraeus scandal. agents searched paula broadwell's home last night. they left with what appeared to be documents and paperwork. broadwell co-authored petraeus' biography. both of them admitted to having an affair that led to petraeus'

resignation as head of the cia last week. and petraeus' friends and former colleagues saye was shocked to learn the fbi was looking into allegations broadwell sent threatening e-mails to another woman. the retired general insists his relationship with that woman was platonic even though broadwell apparently saw her as a romantic rival. meanwhile, the chair of the senate intelligence committee says she still plans to call petraeus to testify about the deadly attacks on the embassy in benghazi. they'll likely question him in a closed session. general petraeus was supposed to testify before the senate this week. lawmakers will try to reach a deal on a spending plan to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff. they must reach an agreement by the end of the year to avoid billions of dollars in tax hikes and spending cuts. economists fear that could plunge our economy into a deep recession. president obama will discuss the

issue with congressional leaders on friday. the man suspected of being the east coast rapist is expected to enter his first guilty plea in virginia today. aaron thomas is expected to take responsibility for the 2009 attack on three teenage trick or treaters in prince william county. he's accused of forcing them into the woods and raping two of them on halloween night. thomas is expected to enter a second guilty plea in loudoun county at the end of the month. both those cases carry life sentences. rescuers saved one person in a house fire in the district. it broke out at the 1700 block of benning road northeast. firefighters say the fire started in the kitchen causing heavy smoke. three people were taken to the hospital. they're expected to be okay. two cars struck and killed a 42-year-old woman trying to cross the street in prince george's county. it happened at the 3800 block of kenilworth avenue and bladensburg.

the victim, mary harding, was not in the crosswalk at the time. no word on whether the drivers will face any charges. and in montgomy county, a car hit another woman. she was walking across randolph road in silver spring when she was hit. investigators believe the woman was not in the crosswalk. the man did stay on the scene. his 10-year-old son was with him. federal investigators made disturbing findings at the massachusetts plant linked to a deadly meningitis outbreak. the fbi released a report saying they found leaky ceilings, insects, and even a bird inside the room where the drugs were stored. the company did not investigate at least 53 incidents of bacterial contaminations inside the facility. the lab is responsible for 19 deaths in the united states. they'll vote today on $500

i'm angie goff at the news 4 live desk. a syrian jet bombed near the turkish border. it happened over the town, leaving people running for their lives. this is the second day of attacks in the area. the attacks continue as forces loyal to syrian president bashar al assad try to regain control of the area which fell to the rebels last week. one homeowner says his faulty furnace may have caused the deadly house explosion in indianapolis. the couple who lived next door died in the blast. investigators have been looking

at gas meters and pipe lines trying to figure out what happened saturday night. they have not ruled anything out in the blast, which damaged 30 homes in the neighborhood. some of the 200 people evacuated have been allowed to return home. police believe a custody dispute is the cause of a murder/suicide that left five people dead in ohio. investigators found a man, his mother, and his three children dead inside of a garage yesterday. all five died from carbon monoxide poisoning. police say the children were living with their grandparents, but the parents were trying to regain custody. john mcafee says he is innocent but is wanted for questioning after his neighbor was found shot to death with this weekend. a tech website says mcafee is worried for his safety and fears he'll be murdered if he turns himself in. mcafee helped found mcafee

anti-virus in 1987. the man behind elmo on sesame street is in jail on allegations he had sex with a 16-year-old boy. kevin clash has been the voice of elmo since the 1980s. the accuser, who is now 23, first made the charges in june. 52-year-old clash said the allegations are false and defamatory. he writes, "i had a relationship with the accuser. it was between two consenting adults, and i am deeply saddened that he is trying to characterize it as something other than what it was." the teens accused of murdering a cab driver were looking for money. investigators say 17-year-old linda berry and joshua mebain were staying in a hotel. they hailed a cab and killed the driver. take a look at this exclusive video from news 4. it shows police taking a

19-year-old into custody after he was accused of making threats at montgomery college. he told friends he wanted to shoot people just for fun following a failed relationship. the friends alerted campus security, who called police. overnight we learned a florida man is now charged in connection with a crash that killed two people and injured three others in frederick county, maryland. the crash happened yesterday afternoon at route 75 and ed mcclain road in the monroe area. you can see the tractor-trailer loaded with oranges that overturned onto a pickup truck. two people inside the truck died on the scene. passengers in the truck and tractor-trailer were taken to the hospital. no word on their condition. police arrested the driver of the tractor-trailer watson pierre after he was released from the hospital last night. the nationals season might have ended on a disappointing note, but fans have a reason to celebrate this morning. bryce harper is the national league rookie of the year. harper, who turned 20 last month, is the youngest position player ever to win the award. pitcher dwight gooden was one month younger when he won it in
